transitional open style plan with fully retractable window walls
Located on the edge of Okanagan Lake in Kelowna BC this "lake cottage" styled home blends traditional and contemporary elements to maximize the connection between indoor and outdoor space. This is achieved with the use of two multi paneled window walls that retract into pockets to create a totally open "indoor" space. This allows the owners to have a smaller covered patio as the house living and dining areas become an outdoor space when the window walls are retracted.
Although the house has a traditional flair to it we believe it is more transitional in style in that the house is designed with simple detail and minimal mouldings and trim. The large window walls (also known as lift and slide doors) clearly are more modern in nature. The house is designed with simple geometric shapes and simple sculptured roof curves to the eave line.
Minimal interior finishes, douglas fir used extensively and plain simple colours. The structure appears light and airy despite the fact that the structure over the living / dining room is large - this is concealed in the deep floorspace designed to conceal the steel structure and associated beams. A large column on the side is sized to compliment the overall feel of the design - not too large and not too skinny.
Art studio located on the south side of the house with high windows to allow plenty of natural light. The living room is informally separated from a small kid's area where the fireplace and tv unit serve as a visual barrier to the play area behind - allowing easy supervision and maintaining strong contact between the two areas. Simple, elegant, not overdone - another "timeless" home design.
